There is a quote on the sidebar from Shel Sylverstein:
"Listen to the mustn'ts child, Listen to the don'ts.....
Anything can happen child. Anything can be."
It is posted under a picture of Gavyn with Khrystine close behind him. I think it looks as if Khrystine is whispering this poem to Gavyn. And that's why I like it that way. Not much is sweeter than to watch your children and grandchildren interact with each other. It's a lot of fun to watch the older ones "step up to the plate" and become leaders and keepers, if you will, of the little ones. Grandparents aren't leaders. I'm not sure what the role is that we fill. We just hang around and "are there," I think to fill in the spaces. Uncles and Aunts and cousins are the protectors, the peer group...and the admirers who cheer the others on... role models in a big way.
We have two little Hunters now. The older one became so very protective of his little, baby neice. He would come running whenever the baby cried and demand, "Why is my baby crying? What are you doing to my baby?" May that wonderful possessiveness never end. Gavyn is still 'Uncle Ben'. Daddy Steve, now that Steve's little sister has a baby of her own, has realized that he too, is now 'Uncle Ben'. The Real Uncle Ben will arrive here next week.
Family is priceless. "Listen to the never-haves. Then listen close to me.
Anything can happen, child. Anything can be."

I think Grandma's are there for the hugs and the loves and the unconditional acceptance. At least that's what I hope being one myself now. I like the loving and snuggling and spoiling and sending them home... I would have done that first if I could have! All I can say is that my grandma was a huge part of who I became, my values and my goals. My grandparents were always there even when my parents let me down or weren't what i needed them to be at the time.
I think everyone stepping into their places and knowing that you had everything to do with that has got to be a good feeling, it's probably been a rough road but I think you've done well. You've got good kids that love you, grandkids that love you, daughters in law that love you... you're an amazingly important part of this family, there wouldn't be one if it wasn't for you. That's what Grandma's do...
Wonderfully said, Heather. Thanks. And you are doing very well in your positions. It must be challenging and hectic to be filling both roles of mother and grandmother at the same time. I'm very glad everyone has you, who has done a great job of 'stepping up to the plate.'
