Last Tuesday, Papabear and I were invited to attend a special meeting of the Utah Printer's Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, because we are newspaper people. The exciting part of it being the honoring of Pres. Thomas S. Monson.
We were part of a small group representing the Provo Herald.
It took place at one of the nice hotel conference rooms. Dress was, as you would imagine, nice, dressed up. Some were dressed in semi-formal with black tie and long velvet dresses. A small chamber orchestra played classical music.
Pres. Monson made his entrance, of course, after everyone had arrived and been seated at their dinner tables. Everyone stood up for him at this point, as we did when he left. He walked in and greeted all, and personally shook hands and spoke to old friends on his way up to the dais. Our table was front row and directly in front of the podium. Being so close and able to see and hear him that well made it extra special. He talked about being a printer, and his love of musicals and music. He told us he likes stories with happy endings and that's why he watches Perry Mason a lot, because Perry Mason always wins his case and has a happy ending. You have to be endeared by that.
It was fun to listen to Pres. Monson talk about his life as a printer and about himself. It was very comfortable, like a fireside chat. So I feel like we truly did get to meet him on a personal level. As he left the room, the audience again rose to their feet in respect. He walked through the crowd making comments to friends here and there. At the doorway, stopped and played about ten notes on the piano and then waved goodbye. He has a sweet, friendly demeanor and a fun sense of humor. For Steve and me, this was a special occasion indeed.
Do you realize that the printing press is most likely THE most important invention of all time?

This sounds so wonderful. I think it's so cool that my daddy gets invited to things like this :) I also think he has a very elegant, perfect for the role wife with which to share it. I'm so glad you went!
Thank you so much, daughter of mine. You are certainly an improvement on the line, you know.
What an honor to attend this event! I think it sounds just so amazing. I'll bet you were both glowing. This is truly a highlight to remember.
